Twenty-three years ago it was 1987.
Ronald Reagan was president.
A gallon of gas was was .95 cents.
Album of the year was Joshua Tree by U2.
The Cosby Show was #1.
Cher won best actress for her role in Moonstruck.
Only 60% of homes had a microwave.
Think about how different your life is compared to 1987.
I’m 47 now and have four kids. One is married and lives in California. In 1987, I was 24, had been married for two years and had a one-year-old daughter. Twenty-three years from now, I’ll be 70 and will be two years from celebrating my 50th wedding anniversary.
How about you? Maybe you weren’t even born.
Twenty-three years is a long time. And a lot changes in twenty-three years. That is unless you’re the people of Judah.
In Jeremiah 25, the word of the LORD comes to Jeremiah concerning the people of Judah. After hearing from God, here’s what Jeremiah spoke to the people:
“For twenty-three years…the word of the LORD has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again, but you have not listened. And though the LORD has sent all His servants the prophets to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention.”
Twenty-three years. That’s how long Jeremiah had been telling the people of Judah to turn from their evil ways, to stop worshiping idols and turn back to God. For twenty-three years they wouldn’t listen. That’s a long time.
Is there something God has been saying to you? Something you haven’t listened to?
Maybe it’s been only a few days or a week. Maybe it’s been a few months or a year. Maybe it’s been twenty-three.
What has God been saying?
Don’t wait any longer to act on it. Do it today.
What could you be missing out on by not listening to God?
He always has our best in mind. He doesn’t give commands that aren’t for our own good.
Believe Him. Do what He’s been telling you.
