God, Do You Care?

Be honest, do you sometimes wonder if God cares? I mean really cares. About you. About everything you’re going through. The big things. The little things. The things where you really need Him to come through.

The disciples, the twelve guys closest to Jesus, wondered.

One day when evening came, Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to head to the other side of the lake. You know the story–a furious storm came up, the waves broke over the boat and it was nearly swamped. The disciples thought they were about to drown.

What was Jesus doing? He was sleeping.

The disciples woke Him and said, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

So Jesus got up, calmed the storm and said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

Hindsight is great, isn’t it? We have the luxury of looking at the story 2,000 years later and from dry ground. We know Jesus said, “Let us go over to the other side”, so of course they should have known they’d be okay, right?

Yeah, we know it now, but would we have in the midst of the storm? I don’t think so. We’d have missed it just like the disciples. I think we still miss it today, at least I do.

Last night, I woke up in the middle of the night feeling a mixture of anger and worry over several different issues. My emotions were crying out in the storm, “Teacher, don’t you care?”

What storm are you in today? Finances? Health? Marriage? Difficult child? A bad situation at work?

Are you lonely? Scared? Worried? Anxious?

Does it seem like Jesus is asleep again?

You may be wondering if He cares. You know He’s not asleep. You know He sees what’s happening, but wonder why He isn’t helping. Why does He let the fear, the pain, the worry, the unknown continue for so long?

I’ll be honest, I wonder…so I have no magic formula to offer. I do know there’s something powerful in Jesus’ questions though: Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?

Our fear (and worry, anxiety, doubt) results from our lack of faith. Our faith is weak because we do not know Jesus well enough. If we knew Him better, we would trust Him more. We would not wonder if He cared. We would be sure of it.

In the midst of your storm, are you wondering if He cares?

Focus on your relationship with Him. As you know Him better, you will discover that He does indeed care. He’s with you through every wave of the storm. He will not fail you.
