Remember the movie National Treasure? Nicholas Cage is on a life-long search for a hidden treasure and follows one clue after another, eventually stealing the Declaration of Independence so he can discover the secret clues written on the back. By the end of the movie, he has found what he’s been searching for.
I can’t help thinking that understanding God’s heart and mind, knowing His wisdom and getting a glimpse into the “deep things of God” is much like searching for a great hidden treasure. It’s as if God gives more clues the more we search. Hebrews 11:6 tells us He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. The word “earnestly” means “with serious effort.”
In Colossians 2:2-3, Paul said, “My purpose is that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
1 Corinthians 2:9-10 says, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him–but God has revealed it to us by His Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.”
We can know many shallow things about God, but when we seek God with serious effort, He reveals more of Himself and calls us to keep searching for the “deep things.” When we do, He rewards us with more of Himself…and calls us to go deeper.
What treasures may await us? What might God reveal?
Only those who search will find out.
