Swine Flu, Terrorism and the Recession

Swine flu is about to kill you and everyone you know. In a matter of days, the whole world will be infected. It’s bad. It’s everywhere. It’s coming for you.

If you somehow manage to live through swine flu, then you’re probably a sitting duck for a terrorist attack. Our borders aren’t safe. We’re vulnerable. Lookout.

The lucky few who make it through the flu and escape the terrorists still have the recession to deal with. Your house is worth less than you owe. So is your car, by the way. Everyone you know is being laid off. Your own job is hanging by a thread. It’s only a matter of time until you’re living on the street. Don’t even think about retiring someday.

At first glance, swine flu, terrorism and the recession appear to be unrelated, but when we peak behind the curtain we see the common denominator. Fear. Terror even.

Of course, a world view that does not include an all-powerful, loving God leaves us no other choice but to live in fear.

Sadly, believers in Jesus often live like He doesn’t even exist. We consume one negative thought after another and act like God is no longer on His throne ruling the universe.  We walk around much of the day in a fog of fear. It can get so thick that we can’t see anything else.

Fear does not have to be fatal though. There is an immunization for it. Read the following passage from Isaiah 41 and substitute your name where you see “Israel” and “Jacob.” It’s okay, you’re a spiritual descendant of Abraham.

“But you, Israel, are my servant.
You’re Jacob, my first choice,
descendants of my good friend Abraham.
I pulled you in from all over the world,
called you in from every dark corner of the earth,
Telling you, ‘You’re my servant, serving on my side.
I’ve picked you. I haven’t dropped you.’
Don’t panic. I’m with you.
There’s no need to fear for I’m your God.
I’ll give you strength. I’ll help you.
I’ll hold you steady, keep a firm grip on you.

Read it again…and again. Let it sink in. God is not going to drop you. His grip is strong. There’s no need to fear.
