The Devil’s Schemes, Part 2

Yesterday, we looked at how Satan schemes to deceive us. Today, we’ll look at two other schemes: fear and discouragement.

In Joshua 1, God tells Joshua, “Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people….” Later God says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua is facing an enormous task…leading the nation of Israel into the land of Canaan. Getting two million people across the Jordan River and going to battle against those occupying the land would bring many opportunities for fear and discouragement.

Both emotions are paralyzing. And the enemy knows it.

Whenever we focus on our circumstances it’s very easy to become fearful or discouraged or both. As I type this, the president is about to give his State of the Economy speech. I’m not watching. I know the economy is in recession and the Dow is at an 11 year low. I don’t need additional reminders. It’ll only cause fear, worry and discouragement.

I’ve got personal circumstances that can easily become overwhelming if I focus on them. So do you. Maybe your job is about to be eliminated. I have a friend who just learned his father’s cancer has returned. You may have your own health issues. Or your marriage might be in trouble. Or you’re dealing with the loss of someone close to you. Almost any circumstance we face can lead to fear and discouragement.

Our circumstances can genuinely be hard and painful. So what do we do?

God reminded Joshua, “the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” That’s the key. God is with us. No matter what we face…God is with us.

He will never fail you. He will never leave you. He will not always rescue you from the pain and difficulties, but He will always be with you through them.

When circumstances seem to be more than you can handle, the enemy wants nothing more than for you to focus on them. He wants your circumstances to generate paralyzing fear and discouragement.

Your defense is to remember God. Remember He’s in control. Remember He’s good. Remember He will never fail you. Remember He’s working out His good plan in your life.
