If you’ve seen “50 First Dates”, you know that as a result of a car accident, Lucy has lost her short-term memory. Everyday when she wakes up, she has no memory of the previous day.
Henry falls in love with Lucy and everyday does whatever he can to make Lucy fall in love with him.
It’s too bad that I play the part of Lucy and expect God to play the part of Henry. Sometimes it’s as if I have no memory of anything God has done prior to today. I forget He spoke to me. I forget He met my need. I forget He came through when I saw no way.
After the nation of Israel had experienced God’s many miracles, Psalm 106:12 says, “Then they believed His promises and sang His praise.”
Then they must have slept. Verse 13 says, “But they soon forgot what He had done and did not wait for His counsel.”
Part of my problem is forgetting that I forget. Remembering that I don’t remember would at least be a good place to start.
It almost seems that we’re incapable of remembering on our own though. Jesus said, “…the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My Name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
The Spirit takes the Word of God, which is “living and active”, and reminds me of the truth. I experience Him doing this in my life when I spend time alone with Him and when I listen to Him speak to me through others.
Henry makes a video for Lucy, which she watches every morning to remind her of what’s true. Our videos are God’s Word and people He brings into our lives to speak truth to us. Time alone with Him and time living in community with others are our safeguards against forgetting.
Don’t forget it.
