Evolution: A Leap of Faith

The first verse of the Bible is:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

The rest of chapter 1 fills in the details.

The first three verses of the gospel of John are:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

The Word is Jesus.

The first two verses of the book of Hebrews are:

In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.

Colossians 1:16-17 says:

For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

The Bible couldn’t be more clear: the universe was created by and for Jesus.

But if you choose to not believe that Jesus is the Creator, then you’ve got to somehow explain the universe. Some have adopted Darwinism. Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution is simply an attempt to explain creation apart from God.

Now to believe in evolution, you’ve got to believe:

  • Nothing produced everything.
  • Non-life produced life.
  • Non-living chemicals self-assembled into living cells.
  • Randomness produced complexity.
  • Chaos produced information.

In other words, the universe is an incredibly complex accident.

Further, because creation is an accident, it has no meaning. How could it? Without something greater than creation to give meaning to it, it simply has no meaning or significance. Of course that means you don’t have significance or purpose either. You are an accident, pure and simple. IF evolution is true.

And yet consider the fact that our bodies are comprised of approximately 100 trillion cells and every one contains a highly-complex six-foot strand of DNA. Think about that for a moment. 100 trillion cells. Too small to even be seen with the naked eye. Each containing a strand of DNA that is six feet long.

So how did such an awesome amount of complex encoding make its way into every one of our cells? By accident? Really? Think about it.

Jonathan Wells earned an undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley in geology and physics with a minor in biology. He earned a doctorate in religious studies at Yale. He also received a doctorate in molecular and cell biology from Berkeley where he later worked as a post-doctorate research biologist. Wells said, “My conclusion is that the case for Darwinian evolution is bankrupt. The evidence for Darwinism is not only grossly inadequate, it’s systematically distorted.”

Faith is simply a reasonable step in the same direction in which the evidence is pointing.

Which way is it pointing for you?

The Bible answers our most fundamental questions. How did the universe get here? Who created it? And why?

Darwin’s theory of evolution answers none of those questions.

Biochemist Michael Behe said, “My conclusion can be summed up in a single word: design. I say that based on science. I believe that irreducibly complex systems are strong evidence of a purposeful, intentional design by an intelligent agent.”

Personally, I don’t have enough faith to believe everything came from nothing and exists for no reason. I find it much more reasonable to believe there’s a highly intelligent designer behind the universe and that His name is Jesus.
