Flash Forward

Have you seen the new television show “Flash Forward”? The premise is this: on October 6th, everyone in the world blacks out, at exactly the same time, for 2 minutes and 17 seconds. During the black out, each person flashes forward and gets a glimpse of their life on April 29th.

Some people love what they see in their future. Some don’t. One woman saw herself in an affair with a man she doesn’t even know…yet. Some people don’t see anything in their flash forward and are left to wonder if it means they’re not going to be alive in six months.

What begins to happen is that people start living their lives based on what they believe the future holds. For example, a surgeon makes a decision during surgery based on something the patient said he saw in his flash forward. That decision saves the life of the patient on the operating table.

Right before the black out, one man was about to commit suicide, but he no longer wishes to die because of what he saw in his flash forward. His total outlook on life has changed.

I can’t give you a glimpse of your life in six months, but I can give you a glimpse of your life 100 years from now.

If you’re a follower of Jesus, you will be in heaven with Him. You will be living in friendship with Him. You will love Him. You will serve and worship Him. You will be enjoying Him…forever. Nothing else will matter.

Your possessions, your money, your hobbies, your car, your house–the things that consume so much of our attention in this life–will not matter. They will have no value, no relevance. You will not care about them.

So knowing that what will be important to you in 100 years, and for all of eternity, is your relationship with Jesus…does that fact change the way you live today?

The Bible provides the ultimate flash forward…and ought to change how we live today. In other words, Jesus and people are the priorities. Not stuff.
