The Hardest Thing To Give Away

I like to give money. I especially like to give it when someone isn’t expecting it. It’s fun. It’s also easy.

I also enjoy giving my talent. Because I’ve had many years of experience in the area of fitness, I’m often asked for advice about working out or eating right. I’m always glad to help…and it’s easy.

Tonight, as I have on many other occasions, I observed some people giving something away that’s much harder for me, but is far more valuable than money or fitness tips. I watched people give their time.

Mark and Lindsay Mast lead the Young Life committee in Fayetteville. It’s a huge task that requires a lot of time. Michael and Julie Drager not only help with Young Life, but also lead the youth ministry at our church. Both couples came to the end-of-the-year Young Life dinner at our house tonight. Oh, Mark and Lindsay are also celebrating their third wedding anniversary tonight.

The meal was prepared by Jennifer Mathis, who not only gave her talent, but also her time. Elisabeth Beasley gave her time to deliver the drinks. Both women have young children to also care for, but they gave their time anyway. Kristin Bohacek also came. She’s leading worship in the living room as I type these words. She came after working all day.

The room is also filled with college students who have committed to reaching their campus with the love of Christ by serving with Young Life. Finals are coming up. They could be studying or writing papers or just relaxing, but they’re here…giving their time away.

I guess because I often act selfishly with my time, I’m always amazed by people who consistently and faithfully give theirs. It’s the hardest thing to give away, at least for me, but it speaks the loudest and clearest, saying, “I love you. You’re important to God. You’re important to me.”
