The Work of God Begins With This…

The morning after Jesus fed the five thousand, walked on water and crossed to the other side of the lake, the crowd realized He was missing, so they got into boats and went in search of Him.

When they found Him on the other side of the lake, they asked Him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”

Of all the questions they could have asked, I think it’s funny that’s what they wanted to know. I guess they were curious, because only one boat had left shore the previous night and they knew Jesus had not been in it.

Regardless, Jesus ignores their question and tells them He knows they’re not looking for Him because of the miraculous signs, but because He fed them. Then He says, “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.”

The crowd then asks, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

Do you remember what Jesus tells them? If not, what would you expect Him to say?

Serve the poor?

Feed the hungry?

Care for widows and orphans?

Pray? Give? Fast? Worship?

Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.”

The work of God doesn’t begin with doing. The work of God begins with believing.
